British car buyers love for shades of grey show no signs of changing, according to the latest data on new car sales from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

But, green is a growing climber in the colour charts!
In 2025, nearly 100,000 new cars were registered in green with electric buyers particularly favouring a green tint. One in 20 new EVs carried the colour.
Interestingly, the best selling green car was the Kia Sportage, whilst online sales platform, Carwow, saw a 51% increase in enquiries for green cars, compared to 2024.
In the SMMT data, grey remains the dominant choice of new owners with 558,050 grey cars registered in 2025. That’s 27.6% of all new vehicles.
Black again takes second place with 464,369 registrations (23%) and the highest volume since 2019. Blue followed in third spot with 306,349 new cars (up 4.9%) and white and silver giving a combined share of 19.4% in the colour chart.
The once popular red slipped to sixth place with the lowest market share (5.8%) since records began.
Bringing up the rear was maroon, pink and turquoise, accounting for only 342 registrations combined.
Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the SMMT said: “UK car buyers preferences remain pretty consistent and monochrome continues to lead in popularity.
“The surge in green, however, matches the growing popularity of electric cars as the new car market decarbonises.”
