A specialist restoration business in Ilkley is making waves refurbishing and upgrading classic car radios.

Agenta Audio was set up 12 years ago by former management consultant, Colin Armstrong, to bring back to life that key piece of any vintage car dash.
I went along to meet Colin at his workshop to find out more.
Straightaway, I was struck by Colin’s passion for electronics, his tech knowledge and his love for great classic cars.
Colin said: “Agenta Audio is all about restoring the beauty and functionality of old classic radios from the 1930s right through to the 1970s.

“I’ve been interested in electronics since being a kid and I’m fascinated by the use of modern technology to help bring these lovely old things back to life and make them enjoyable again.
“Building ‘period correct’ radios that look great in classic cars and have modern functionality gives me great pride.”
Colin is able to transform radio sets including installing FM and DAB and connect to technologies such as Bluetooth.
“Today, customers want access to modern functionality and this includes being able to control their car radios through their smartphone,” says Colin.
A look around his workshop reveals scores of old radios and radio cassettes. Some in the middle of restoration for customers and others bought for sale or used for valuable parts. They include famous names like Radiomobile, Motorola, Philips, Blaupunkt and Becker.

Colin is equally happy carrying out repairs and servicing of car audios including radio cassette and 8-track functions.
It’s Colin’s expertise that helped forged a dealership arrangement with US manufacturers Aurora Design to introduce modern electronics into early car radios.
Colin also works with heritage divisions from some of the UK’s most prestigious car brands such as Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Jensen and Jaguar.
During my visit I also learned more about how Agenta’s comprehensive website and ‘word of mouth’ interest has attracted classic car owners from around the globe to get in touch.

In part 2 of my business profile I will look at some of Agenta’s top customer projects including a special restoration job for the Salvage Hunters Classic Cars team on TV.
